What makes work-life balance in Luxembourg so good?
Free mobility, family care, a global work culture: discover how Luxembourg assures a healthy work-life balance for working professionals.
Luxembourg is home to people from over 180 nations. More than 47% of residents are foreign nationals. So, what makes Luxembourg so attractive for these expats?
It might just be the outstanding work-life balance. The country ranks No. 1 in Europe by Statista’s 2025 Quality of Life Index and No. 2 globally in a 2026 ranking of the same name by Numbeo. The reasons why vary, depending on your preferences and background, but here are a few of the most common ones:
- Free public transportation
- A strong family care system
- The highly internationalised work environment
- A high average purchasing power, among the highest in the world
- Proximity to nature and culture with abundant travel opportunities
Here, a truly equitable work-life balance is a fact of daily life. Below we take a look at each of these in more detail.
Mobility made easy

Due to its compact size and interconnected modes of transportation, getting around Luxembourg is efficient and almost entirely free. The country offers free public transport nationwide, from trains and buses to the city tram – and even late-night shuttles. Exceptions are first class travel and the international part of tickets going to other countries.
Combine this with bike-friendly streets and an extensive network of 23 cycling trails totalling 600 km, and you and your family have a reliable alternative to the car that benefits your well-being, the environment and your wallet. (By the way, did you know that the winner of the 2010 Tour de France is from Luxembourg?)
Is your next meeting in Paris? Take the French high-speed train TGV and you will be there in just over 2 hours.
On top of that, trains to Trier, Germany (twice an hour) and Metz, France (four times an hour) offer an excellent connection to the neighbouring countries. Is your next meeting in Paris? New investments in infrastructure are becoming a reality in the next few years, further improving connectivity to neighbouring countries.
As for air travel when longer distances are needed, Luxembourg Airport is rated one of the least stressful airports in Europe, thanks to its location close to the capital city and the fact that 95% of passengers clear security in under 15 minutes. There are more than 70 direct flights to destinations in Europe, parts of Asia and North Africa.
Luxembourg’s family care system

Raising children is no easy task, but the Luxembourg government offers a lot of options to make it easier. Generously subsidised childcare and maternity programmes mean you do not have to choose between job and family. The benefits extend from pre-natal maternity leave and parental leave (with options for both fathers and mothers) to paid days off, in case your child is sick.
Among the subsidies to help manage the demands of parenting are vouchers for free childcare for ages 4-12 during school days, from 07:00 to 19:00. These can also be used for holiday and extended-hour care as well. It doesn’t hurt that free music and dance lessons are also offered to keep your kids learning, developing and active.

Excellent free public and international schools, both with privatised options as well, give parents flexibility in raising their children. Education in Luxembourg often comes with high teacher-to-student ratios and multilingual opportunities that cultivate diverse skillsets. All around, families excel in Luxembourg.
A global work culture

Looking to gain an upper hand in your career through exposure to an international work environment? With nearly 75% of the country's workforce consisting of immigrant workers or cross-border commuters, there might be no better place than Luxembourg.
People in Luxembourg speak an average of more than 3 languages.
Benefits of such a highly multi-cultural environment include gaining diverse perspectives on complex issues and exchanging shared experiences with other expats that aid and ease integration into your new surroundings. It also helps that only 3 % of the workforce puts in 50 or more hours, according to the OECD Better Life Index, which means more time for bonding outside the office as well.
Not sure if you will fit in because you do not know another language? That is less an issue here (although making an effort to learn some language nuances helps). People in Luxembourg speak an average of more than 3 languages. Luxembourgish, French, German and English are all common, not to mention Portuguese and Spanish as well, giving you more options to connect with others and fit in.
Highest purchasing power in the world

Luxembourg's cost of living might not be the lowest, but Luxembourg has the highest GDP per capita in the world. That includes a significantly higher rate in Europe based on Purchasing Power Parity. This means that, on average, the economic output per person in Luxembourg allows more goods and services to be purchased than in other countries.
In short, the costs are high, but so is the average compensation. This is the result of competitive salaries, strong social security benefits and economic stability. All in all, you are more likely to get a better balance of income versus expenses than many other European locations.
In addition, Luxembourg has a lower rate of VAT than its neighbours, with many reduced rates for medical supplies and basic necessities.
Nature, culture and travel

With vast green spaces, extensive cycling paths and easy access to other European capitals, Luxembourg provides plenty to do in terms of outdoor activities, culture and travel. Located between France, Germany and Belgium, the country offers everything from medieval castles and UNESCO heritage sites to modern art galleries and marvellous concert venues.

Nature lovers will find over 5,000 km of well-maintained hiking trails in the midst of lush forests, vineyards, and nature reserves. Meanwhile, culture enthusiasts can enjoy philharmonic orchestras, dynamic art museums, historical monuments and museums, as well as numerous festivals and outdoor concerts throughout the year. The country's central European location means you can reach Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam within a few hours, making weekend city trips very accessible.
It can be difficult to pinpoint the single reason why work and life are so well balanced in Luxembourg. In the end, it is a bouquet of a lot of reassuring things. One thing is certain: Luxembourg puts a smile on your face.
